Governance

In Illinois, IDOT has statutory responsibility for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of Illinois' extensive transportation network, which encompasses highways and bridges, airports, public transit, rail freight and rail passenger systems. This vast transportation system supports the fifth largest state in the nation and more than 100 million visitors annually.

It is our mission to provide safe, cost-effective transportation for Illinois in ways that enhance quality of life, promote economic prosperity, and demonstrate respect for our environment. We will accomplish our mission while making the following principles the hallmark of all our work: Safety, Integrity, Diversity, Responsiveness, Quality, Innovation. Through the execution of this mission, we strive to be recognized as the premier state department of transportation in the nation, while keeping the multi-modal transportation vision, “Transforming Transportation for Tomorrow,” in mind.
