Career Day

Career Day is a workforce development tool designed to introduce high school students to careers in the transportation industry. Through hands-on activities, exhibits, and heavy equipment demonstrations, local middle and high school students get the opportunity to learn about several exciting transportation related careers.

Thanks to the dedication and commitment of community partners, volunteers, and staff, these events were a success in promoting awareness and education of transportation careers among Illinois youth.

IDOT Career Days - 2013

IDOT held two Career Day events in Peoria and Chicago on October 3 and 18, 2013. The two events attracted approximately 400 students and over 70 vendors. Using hands-on activities, exhibits and heavy equipment demonstrations, students were able to experience possible career paths in transportation at IDOT.

IDOT Career Day - 2010

The 4th Annual IDOT Career Day was a great success made possible by the hard work and dedication of IDOT staff as well as the partnership of our industry and educational partners.

Approximately 400 middle and high school students were in attendance for today’s event. Students were exposed to over 40 exhibits which will include hands-on activities and several pieces of heavy equipment used to build and maintain Illinois’ system of highways and bridges.

The careers highlighted include civil engineering, engineering technology, safety engineering, surveying and construction trades. In addition to hearing about specific career opportunities, students were also provided with a bag containing information about construction careers, including brochures and bookmarks. Career Day attendees also received items such as a hard hat and safety glasses provided by industry partners.

IDOT Career Day - 2009

The 3rd Annual IDOT Career Day, Springfield, was held October 1, 2009 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Expo building and Happy Hallow. Approximately 575 middle and high school students from 20 schools attended Career Day this year to learn about the different careers in transportation from over 60 exhibitors. Although, the weather did not give us much of a break, the group guides rose to the challenge and kept their students entertained with a little help from the exhibitors.
