Illiana Corridor Project Receives Federal Approval

Springfield, IL and Indianapolis, IN – The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today signed the Illiana Corridor Tier Two Record of Decision, marking the completion of the project’s environmental planning phase. With the issuance of the Record of Decision, the FHWA supports the transportation need for the project, approves the analysis of its environmental impacts, as well as any mitigation efforts, and concurs with the selected route alternative for the new 50-mile highway facility connecting Interstate 55 near Wilmington, IL, with Interstate 65 near Lowell, IN.

Construction Begins on Chicago-Moline Rail Service

October 21, 2014

CHICAGO–Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today the start of construction on the new passenger rail route connecting Chicago and Moline. The $23 million in improvements underway at the BNSF Railway’s Eola Yard in Aurora are made possible by funds from the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) $177 million grant toward the project, as well as $78 million in matching funds provided by Governor Quinn’s Illinois Jobs Now! capital program.

First of Jane Byrne Interchange Bridges Opens

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced tonight that the new Morgan Street bridge is now open to traffic. Morgan Street is the first of the nine major bridges crossing the expressway system near downtown Chicago that are being rebuilt as part of Governor Pat Quinn’s $420 million reconstruction of the Jane Byrne Interchange.

IDOT Encourages Motorcycle Riders to Take Free Training Courses

With motorcycle riding season in full swing, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) today announced that openings are still available in upcoming motorcycle training courses.

Training courses are for any Illinois resident 16 years of age or older who holds a valid automobile or motorcycle driver’s license or permit.

Although designed for the novice rider as part of the Cycle Rider Safety Training Program (CRSTP), experienced riders also can gain from the BRC training.  The course will include approximately 20 hours of instruction. Participants will receive a course textbook, seven hours of classroom instruction and 13 hours of “hands-on” cycle instruction. The Basic Riding Course will give participants the physical skills and knowledge needed to ride properly and safely.

Public Hearing Scheduled for Preliminary Engineering Study to Replace IL 178 Bridge

September 12, 2014

UTICA - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will host a public hearing Thursday, Sept. 18, regarding the preliminary engineering study to replace the Illinois 178 bridge over the Illinois River, in Utica. The proposed project includes constructing a replacement bridge east of the existing bridge, while maintaining traffic on the existing bridge. This will require the re-alignment of a portion of Illinois 178. A shared-use path will be constructed along the east side of Illinois 178 from Donaldson Street to Starved Rock Road to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. Following construction of the new bridge, the existing bridge will be removed. The hearing will be conducted in an open-house format, and all information will be available from 4 to 7 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) officials today joined representatives from Ford, The Allstate Foundation and the Illinois State Police at the Illinois State Fairgrounds to kick off the eighth year of Operation Teen Safe Driving (OTSD). The statewide program, also sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund, is administered by IDOT’s Division of Transportation Safety. Since 2007, this nationally recognized program, has contributed to a 55 percent decline in teen fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes on Illinois roadways, including teen drivers, passengers, pedestrians and pedacyclists killed in motor vehicle crashes.

Key Milestone Reached on Chicago-Moline Service

Flashing Yellow Arrow Traffic Signals to be Installed at Wabash Avenue Intersections

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that in an effort to improve safety at intersections, flashing yellow arrow traffic signals are being installed at numerous Wabash Avenue intersections in Springfield. Two flashing yellow arrow traffic signals were activated on Tuesday at the east and west White Oaks Mall entrances. The four remaining signals, between Veterans Parkway and MacArthur Boulevard, are expected to be installed and operational by Friday.

Schneider announced today that 422 volunteers collected and removed almost 800 bags of trash from state highway roadsides as part of the inaugural Adopt-A-Highway spring cleanup April 18-27.
