Participant Prerequisite Requirement: All participants must have met one of the three prerequisite requirements for participation in the FHWA-NHI-130055 course* and bring a course completion certificate bearing his/her name to the first day of the 130055 session. The passing score for all prerequisites is 70 percent or better. Individuals have the option to complete one of the three prerequisite requirements:

  1. Engineering Concepts for Bridge Inspectors (FHWA-NHI-130054), five-day instructor led course.
  2. Introduction to Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130101), 14-hour,
    web-based training and assessment.
  3. Prerequisite Assessment for Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130101A), web-based assessment.

Seating for the course will be limited. If more individuals register than seats available, IDOT will determine the class roster based on the needs of the department and other considerations.

Calculating Section Loss in Steel Members

This webinar is intended to provide an introduction to section loss calculations on steel bridge members for NBIS inspectors. The methods covered are those preferred by IDOT for use with the Structure Information and Procedure Manual in determining NBI ratings as well as to gather information for rating analysis calculations on damaged structures. The topics covered include critical areas to inspect, taking measurements, documentation of findings and calculation of section loss. Example section loss calculations are reviewed. This webinar is approximately 85 minutes.

Bridge Element Inspection Class

35 seats are available. The class is to provide element inspection training for inspectors who will be performing element level inspections on structures on the National Highway System.  Element level inspection for NHS structures is a requirement of MAP-21.

There is no cost for the class. 18.0 Professional Development Hours will be available for attending the class.  Attendees for the class will be selected based on the needs of the Department and local agencies with NHS bridges in their inventory. 

Please note this class will not fulfill the requirements of inspection refresher training outlined in Section 3.9.3.1 of the 2013 Structural Services Manual.
