The Illinois Department of Transportation has initiated a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) for the improvement of 55th Street from Wolf Road to Brainard Avenue in the Villages of Western Springs and La Grange, the City of Countryside, and unincorporated La Grange Highlands, in Cook County. The general scope of work for this improvement is anticipated to consist of widening and resurfacing 55th Street to provide a continuous flush median, adding a southbound right turn lane on Willow Springs Road, traffic signal replacement, pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations, and drainage improvements. This project was included in the Joliet Road Feasibility Study, which recommended several roadway improvements to mitigate the traffic impacts from the closure of Joliet Road. This project is not included in the Department’s FY 2017-2022 Proposed Highway Improvement Program. However, the Department remains committed to funding 40 million dollars in highway improvements in this area, including engineering, land acquisition, construction, and construction engineering. Construction and preconstruction activities will continue to be prioritized for inclusion in future multi-year programs as projects are developed and readied for construction.
Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.
