IL 7 from 131st Street to south of 135th Street

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is nearing completion of a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) for the improvement of IL 7 from 131st Street to south of 135th Street in the Villages of Orland Park and Palos Park in Cook County.  The scope of work consists of drainage and roadway improvements that increase the level of flood protection along IL 7.  This improvement is included in IDOT’s FY 2019-2024 Proposed Highway Improvement Program.  Current engineering efforts are targeted to enable a contract letting in the middle years of the multi-year program contingent upon plan readiness, land acquisition, and funding availability through future annual legislative appropriations.

Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.

Section 4(f) Public Review and Comment - July 31, 2017 to August 30, 2017

The improvement will require permanent and temporary easements within Groundhog Slough, located in the northwest corner of the IL 7 and 131st Street intersection, to construct a right turn lane, improve drainage and replace traffic signals.  Impacts were minimized and coordinated with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.  The public was provided an opportunity to comment between July 31, 2017 to August 30, 2017.  On December 15, 2017 the Forest Preserve District of Cook County concurred the easements will not result in adverse impacts.  The Section 4(f) document can be viewed here.

Open House Public Meeting – July 27, 2016

An open house public meeting was held to discuss the need for the improvement, to present the proposed improvement plan and required land acquisition, and to obtain public input. The following materials were presented at the meeting:
