The primary purpose of the project is to improve safety and roadway operations by replacing the existing roadway/railroad grade separation for Illinois Route 1 roadway and CSX railroad just north of Milford. The project involves removing the existing single span thru girder bridge (SN 038-0024) and replacing it with a structure which carries IL 1 over the CSX Railroad just west of the existing viaduct. This bridge has been determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historical Places.
Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.
