New IDOT study highlights importance of Illinois airports

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced the results of a new study showing that Illinois airports contribute $95.5 billion and more than 490,000 jobs to the state's economy, reinforcing the importance of aviation on the state's multimodal transportation system to promote mobility, supply chain movement, job creation and local quality of life. Designed to better understand and quantify the aviation system's impact on the state, the 2020 Illinois Aviation Economic Impact Analysis is the first report of its kind released by IDOT since 2012 and comes as Gov. JB Pritzker is overseeing historic improvements to airports through the Rebuild Illinois capital program.

Rebuild Illinois’ Delhi Bypass project in Jersey County opens Dec. 22, several months ahead of schedule

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that the Delhi Bypass in Jersey County will open to all four lanes of traffic several months ahead of schedule, weather permitting, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22. The $18.6 million project, a cornerstone of Gov. JB Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program in the Metro East, built a new road by expanding U.S. 67 from two to four lanes, beginning in Godfrey and progressing north 2.4 miles around Delhi.

ICC Grants $3.1 Million to Advance Safety Improvements at Dangerous West Grand Avenue Rail-Highway Crossing in Elmwood Park

Chicago, IL - On Wednesday, the Illinois Commerce Commission authorized the use of $3.1 million from the Multi-Modal Transportation Bond Fund, part of Governor Pritzker's bipartisan Rebuild Illinois Capital Bill, to pay for Phase 2 Engineering costs to develop plans for a grade separation at the West Grand Avenue highway-rail crossing in Elmwood Park. 16 people were injured at the site on November 23, 2005 when a Metra train traveling 70 mph struck six vehicles on the tracks, forcing them to collide with another 11 vehicles.

Rebuilding Illinois: Construction begins on Houbolt Road Extension in Will County

July 20, 2021

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) today joined CenterPoint Properties, Will County and City of Joliet officials to mark the start of construction of the Houbolt Road Extension, a public-private partnership that will improve safety and traffic flow along the critical Interstate 80 corridor, while expanding job growth and economic opportunity. The project includes a 1.5-mile extension of Houbolt Road, a rebuilt interchange with I-80 and a new bridge connecting to the country's largest inland port. By leveraging an IDOT investment of $32 million to accomplish an overall improvement of nearly $200 million, this project furthers Governor JB Pritzker's mission to overhaul one of the state's key travel and freight corridors.

State-supported Amtrak passenger trains to resume full service July 19

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that the Lincoln Service, Carl Sandburg/Illinois Zephyr and Illini/Saluki state-supported Amtrak trains will resume full service effective July 19. Service levels had been reduced by half due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the resumption of a full schedule, there will be five daily roundtrips between Chicago and St. Louis (including the Amtrak national Texas Eagle), two daily roundtrips between Chicago and Quincy, and three daily roundtrips between Chicago and Carbondale (including the Amtrak national City of New Orleans).

Gov. Pritzker Activates State Emergency Operation Center, Deploys National Guard to Respond to Chemical Fire in Winnebago County

June 14, 2021

ROCKTON - Governor JB Pritzker has activated the State Emergency Operation Center to mobilize emergency response personnel and operational facilities to monitor a large chemical fire in Winnebago County. Upon notification of the emergency, the State notified authorities in Winnebago, Stephenson and McHenry counties. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) dispatched crews to the area to assist local jurisdictions to expedite assistance and resources. The Illinois State Emergency Operations Center in Springfield was activated and members of the Illinois National Guard and mobile response vehicles were dispatched to the area.

ICC Announces FY 2022-2026 Crossing Safety Improvement Plan

Springfield, IL - On Thursday, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved its annual five-year Crossing Safety Improvement Program to begin implementing highway-rail safety capital projects for local roads across the state. For Fiscal Years 2022-2026, the ICC will spend $341 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) to help local communities and railroads pay for safety improvements at nearly 500 crossing locations. The plan also allocates $78 million from the Rebuild Illinois (RBI) capital program for the installation of grade crossing protection or grade separations not limited to local routes or other restrictions.
