New I-57 interchange in Kankakee County opens
BOURBONNAIS - The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced the opening of the new Bourbonnais Parkway interchange on Interstate 57. The interchange and related work will provide improved safety and congestion relief for motorists as well as economic benefits to the greater Kankakee County area.
"Our No. 1 priority is the safety of everyone who lives ands and passes through our state," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. "These improvements will boost both highway and rail safety, while also enhancing economic opportunity and quality of life for area residents. This project will be a jobs creator for years to come."
The new interchange, which opened this afternoon, will help better facilitate area freight movements, while providing an additional interstate connection and improving accessibility of current and future developments in the area.
Construction started in August 2015 on the $63 million project, which includes construction of a diamond interchange at 6000N Road and I-57, requiring a new bridge over I-57, reconstruction and widening of 6000N Road and intersection improvements at U.S. 45/52 and Illinois 50.
Additional project details include new storm sewers, a pedestrian and bike path and landscape restoration. The installation of roadway lighting, traffic signals and other related items will complete the work in the coming weeks.
