Rebuilding Illinois: Multiple projects underway in Peoria area
PEORIA - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that multiple projects in the Peoria area are underway or starting soon and extending into 2023. The 10 projects represent a total investment of $280.1 million for the region, with $103.1 million coming from Gov. JB Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois capital program.
"With the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, Illinois isn't just making temporary repairs and patching up existing infrastructure, it's investing for the future," said Gov. Pritzker. "Rebuild Illinois is the beginning of an effort to improve and replace roads and bridges and provide jobs in the Peoria area and across the entire state. In the coming months, IDOT will undertake 10 projects that will ultimately create safer roads and bridges for the Peoria community."
Nine of the 10 projects are ongoing, with one starting later:
• U.S. 150's eastbound McClugage Bridge reconstruction began in 2019, with an anticipated spring 2023 completion. Work is being done adjacent to the structure so all lanes are open for the 2020 season other than for a routine bridge inspection.
• Interstate 74 over the Illinois River's Murray Baker Bridge rehabilitation began this spring and is scheduled to be completed at the end of October. The interstate is closed at the river. Traffic is being detoured to Interstate 474, with local traffic detoured to Illinois 40 through downtown Peoria and East Peoria.
• Illinois 6 resurfacing from north of U.S. 150 to Illinois 40 began earlier this year. The project is scheduled for completion in October. Additional elements, such as drainage, electrical and guardrail improvements, are also included in the project. Traffic will experience daytime lane reductions and full ramp closures.
• Illinois 6 from Illinois 29 to Illinois 40 shoulder restoration began August. This project is scheduled to last for approximately a month and currently wrapping up.
• Illinois 29 patching and resurfacing, from just south of Cloverdale Road in Chillicothe to Dickinson Run Creek, north of Illinois 6 in Peoria County, began this spring. The work is expected to be completed by the end of November. Traffic will experience overnight and daytime lane reductions.
• Farmington Road bridge over Kickapoo Creek will be replaced along with reconstruction of the Kickapoo Creek intersection. The work is expected to be completed late this year. Farmington Road remains open to traffic.
• Pinecrest Drive bridge over I-74 will be replaced, along with pavement reconstruction, patching, resurfacing and guardrail, lighting, and other related work necessary to complete the project. Advance work on the project is scheduled to begin next month and last until mid-October. Pinecrest Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction. No lane closures are allowed on weekdays between 6 and 9 a.m. and between 3 and 7 p.m., except on westbound for culvert work. The project will continue next year with reduced lanes and occasional nighttime I74 closures.
• Illinois 40 (Knoxville Avenue) and Lake Street intersection improvement, reconstruction of the medians, paving and related work. Traffic should expect to see lane reductions in each direction until the project wraps up in late September.
• I-74 patching and resurfacing from east of Illinois 78 to west of Kickapoo/Edwards Road. Drainage improvements and bridge joint replacements will be included as well. Construction will start this month and will be completed in late fall 2021. Traffic will be reduced one lane in each direction. Occasional ramp closures will be scheduled.
• I-74 patching, resurfacing and drainage improvements from west of Kickapoo/Edwards Road to just east of I-474. Construction will start late this summer and completed in late fall 2021. Traffic will be reduced one lane in each direction. Occasional ramp closures will be scheduled.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow for extra time when traveling through these work zones. Drivers are urged to pay attention to changed conditions and signs, watch for traffic signals, stay aware of width restrictions, refrain from using mobile devices and remain alert for workers and equipment.
"Across the nation, highway construction and maintenance continue as essential infrastructure activities. Illinois is no different," said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. "These projects represent a significant investment in the Peoria area that will improve safety, mobility and create economic opportunity for years to come. Please, slow down and pay extra attention driving in and around any work zone."
Passed in 2019, Gov. Pritzker's historic and bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan is investing $33.2 billion into the state's aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history but also the first one that touches all modes of Illinois transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
As part of the new FY2021-26 Proposed Highway Improvement Program released in July, IDOT is investing $21.3 billion to improve roads and bridges over the next six years, the second multi-year plan that reflects the impact of Rebuild Illinois.
