Employee Spotlight: Acting District 9 Geometrics Engineer Sean Greenlee
Acting District 9 Geometrics Engineer Sean Greenlee has spent more than 20 years with IDOT, serving in positions ranging from studies and plans engineer to studies and plans squad leader to his current role.
Here are some of his thoughts about his job and life outside of IDOT.
Tell me about your current job?
Managing a group of engineers, technicians and several consultants. Preparing Phase I reports and reviewing Phase II contract documents, the steps that need to be taken before a project goes out for construction.
Favorite part of the job?
Every day is a new challenge. The job requires a great deal of organization and critical thinking, as well as drawing on input from my peers and all departments, to deliver quality projects to letting for construction.
Anything to highlight?
We are currently dealing with a record-size fiscal program with a ton of projects to work on. We are busier than we have ever been, but it is rewarding knowing that we are able to deliver quality projects for our region and the traveling public.
Anything to tell us about your department?
Mainly we focus on intersection improvements, such as signalized intersections and roundabouts. Safety is always paramount at the department and knowing that our projects make the roads a little safer one project at a time feels great.
Tell me a little bit about your background?
Except for a very short stint at the Missouri Department of Transportation right after college, I am a career IDOT engineer. I graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor’s in civil engineering in 2007 after attending John A. Logan College for my first two years.
How has your previous experience prepared you for your role at IDOT?
I have had the privilege of working with some great engineers over the years. I try every day to instill the same knowledge and work ethic in our younger engineers and technicians that my mentors taught me. Passing the torch, as they say.
What do you like to do outside the office?
I like spending time outside, hanging out with family and friends, golfing, cycling, going to the gym, working on new home projects. I enjoy a manicured yard. I have competed three times in the North American Natural Bodybuilding Federation. Currently trying to master the game that can’t be beat, golf. We spend a good portion of our time at the ball fields coaching and watching our children playing. I played baseball from 5 years old through pitching in college – some of the best memories I have. So, I want my kids to enjoy similar memories of hanging with their friends at the ballpark.
Anything else you’d like people to know about you?
I like to try and keep things simple, but rarely ever do. Whatever I get into, I like to really dig into deep. Researching and pushing myself to be the best I can be daily, in all things.
