Employee Spotlight: District 8 Systems Inventory Chief Kyle Brown
Kyle Brown began working for the Bureau of Information Processing 21 years ago. As the new systems inventory chief in the Bureau of Program Development, he hopes to improve the quality of the department’s data and tracking to keep IDOT aware of small, local changes in communities throughout District 8 in southwest Illinois.
Here are some of his thoughts about his job and life outside of IDOT.
Tell us about your current job?
I maintain accurate data regarding roads in District 8, from speed limits and street names to the type and depth of subsurface. I also keep data on projects completed and much of our historical records, assisting the Bureau of Design in finding reference materials of past work to help develop their plans for upcoming work.
In addition, I often help the department and local agencies settle disputes over jurisdiction by referring to previous agreements kept on file. We also verify the integrity of the existing road systems receiving motor fuel tax funds by performing a regular inventory of the routes receiving disbursements.
Favorite part of the job?
The county inventory process involves verifying all township roads receiving motor fuel tax funds by visiting them and making sure they’re being maintained. It’s nice to be able to get out of the office often and drive on the variety of roads we have all around the district. You see a lot of interesting sights and really get to know the area.
Anything to tell us about your department?
We make sure that the gas tax money is being spent on maintenance of the many rural roads and provide data like Condition Rating Survey numbers to assist with development of the multi-year programs.
What’s your background?
I worked in private sector information technology for several years before joining IDOT. After transferring to the road inventory section, I got a certification in Geospatial Information Systems technology. It’s been a big change, but I am happy with it.
What prepared you for your role?
Having a strong grasp of technology has benefited me greatly when using new tech or utilities in the field, developing modules for common tasks, being able to troubleshoot problems with equipment both in the office and in the field, and adapting to new programs and platforms as they come along.
What do you like to do outside the office?
I enjoy spending time with my family: hiking, camping and exploring with my oldest son; watching cartoons and gaming with my oldest daughter; gardening and cooking (and eating!) with my younger daughter; and watching the baby do his baby stuff.
I coach, or assist in coaching, with my kids’ soccer and baseball teams. I enjoy following the NHL when I get the chance. I have a lot of hobbies and interests I like to share with my family, but the ones I personally enjoy the most are gardening and building and repairing things.
Anything else you’d like people to know?
I’m just happy to be here!
