Governor Pritzker Signs $45 Billion Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan

Gov. JB Pritzker recently signed a historic, bipartisan bill that gives Illinois its first capital plan in nearly a decade – and the most robust in state history. Rebuild Illinois will make $45 billion worth of investments in roads, bridges, railroads, universities, early childhood centers and state facilities over the next six years, creating and supporting an estimated 540,000 jobs over the life of the plan and revitalizing local economies across the state.

“Our roads, bridges, transit providers, ports, rail systems and ability to grow bicycle and pedestrian accommodations have been neglected for too long,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Because of Gov. Pritzker's leadership and the General Assembly's bipartisan support of transportation, IDOT is back in the business of building a premier transportation network that creates jobs and improves quality of life.”

Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in the state’s history, but it’s also the first one that’s truly multimodal. Every aspect and mode of transportation in every part of Illinois will be touched by it.

At IDOT, employees are working to capture the impact of the bill in planning and programming efforts over the coming months and years.

With more projects moving into the pipeline, the department is also redoubling its efforts to boost inclusivity through the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program. That means strengthening programs that provide opportunities to get young people started on a career in transportation and make more small businesses eligible to participate in projects.

This will help create jobs, grow business and ultimately make the capital bill project selection process more competitive.

Rebuild Illinois makes critical investments in infrastructure across several areas. Following is an overview of funds earmarked for transportation projects, totaling $33.2 billion.
