Project Description

What?

IDOT is in the early phase of design and engineering services for an important project on I-55/64 from the Mississippi River to the I-64 interchange.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is conducting a Phase I Engineering Study to analyze and evaluate the repairs, rehabilitation, and/or replacement of various bridges and pavement on Interstate-55/64 from the Mississippi River to the I-64 interchange, including the Illinois 3 ramps in St. Clair County.

This project focuses on rehabilitation of the existing alignment.  IDOT and its team of engineering consultants will be evaluating and preparing reports that focus on bridge conditions, traffic management, pavement designs, proposed improvements, drainage and maintenance of traffic, as well as all other work required to complete Phase I engineering services.

Phase I will include evaluating existing safety and operational conditions and developing recommendations for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the roadway and bridges. This phase also includes public involvement. The project team will engage stakeholders to obtain input on this project. In Phase II, the project team will incorporate information gathered in Phase I and prepare detailed plans needed for construction. Finally, the project will move to construction in Phase III. During Phase III, the public will be kept informed of major construction phases and roadway closures that impact travel via IDOT’s social media outlets.

Why?

IDOT is replacing aging structures and pavement as well as making repairs to extend the service life of this interstate. Design studies will also guide safety improvements to be incorporated in this project.
