Project Summary
The Project will replace the existing dual bridges that carry Interstate 39 (I-39) over the Kishwaukee River south of Rockford in Winnebago County. The new bridges are expected to improve safety and mobility by adding one travel lane in each direction, providing three 12- foot lanes for northbound and southbound traffic. The existing bridges are notable structures: they were the first of their kind built in Illinois and the first in the United States constructed using a launching truss. The current estimated construction cost is $106,000,000.

Project Goals
- Full replacement of the I-39 dual bridges over the Kishwaukee River.
- Minimize construction impacts to the motorized public, surrounding forest preserves, and adjacent communities.
- Construct final improvements within existing Right-of-Way (ROW).
- Maintain a minimum of 2 lanes southbound, 1 lane northbound on I-39 during construction.
- Utilize the Progressive Design-Build delivery method to accelerate the replacement of the structures.
