Project Summary

The Interstate 55/64 Rehabilitation Project in East St. Louis, Illinois will improve one of the region’s most important interstate connections, linking communities, jobs, freight movement, and access across the Mississippi River and to the I-64 interchange. The project will upgrade pavement, replace aging bridges, repair existing structures, and make roadway improvements that support safer travel, better traffic flow, and more reliable daily operations. These improvements will help extend the life of the highway and bridges, reduce the need for future repairs, and deliver lasting benefits for travelers, businesses, and nearby communities.

Location – East St.Louis, IL

Project Goals

  • Improve pavement, bridges, and roadway features to support safer travel, better traffic flow, and more reliable daily operations.
  • Protect nearby communities, natural resources, cultural resources, and existing groundwater pumping operations throughout construction.
  • Reduce travel disruptions by keeping construction moving efficiently, maintaining at least two lanes open in each direction, and completing the work within three construction seasons.
  • Keep travelers, residents, and nearby communities informed with timely, coordinated updates before and during construction.
