Lake County: IL 173 at 21st Street

The Illinois Department of Transportation (Department) has recently initiated preliminary engineering and environmental studies (Phase I) for the improvement of IL 173 (21st Street) at Gilead Avenue in Zion, Lake County. The purpose of this page is to provide information about the study, the study planning process and present public outreach opportunities. The proposed scope of work is anticipated to consist of intersection improvements. 

The Illinois Department of Transportation (Department) has recently initiated preliminary engineering and environmental studies (Phase I) for the improvement of IL 173 (21st Street) at Gilead Avenue in Zion, Lake County.  This improvement is not currently included in the Department's FY 2025-2030 Proposed Highway Improvement Program, however, it will be included in the department’s priorities for future funding consideration among similar improvement needs throughout the region. The proposed scope of work is anticipated to consist of intersection improvements.

  • Average Daily Traffic:
    • IL 173: 6,400-9,600 vehicles per day
    • 21st Street: 3,600 vehicles per day
    • Gilead Avenue: 400 vehicles per day
