Sangamon County - Sangamon Ave and Dirksen Parkway Improvements

The Illinois Department of Transportation is proposing improvements to the intersection of Sangamon Avenue and Dirksen Parkway in Springfield. This webpage has been created to share project details and updates, and to gather public input on the proposed enhancements.

Between 2019-2023, this intersection has averaged more than 60 crashes annually. The purpose of this Phase I Preliminary Engineering Study for Sangamon Avenue and Dirksen Parkway is to enhance safety and improve mobility across all four quadrants of the intersection. Proposed improvements include the addition of turn lanes and a concrete median, which are intended to reduce the frequency of crashes and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

What is the scope of this project?
IDOT’s scope for this project includes reconstructing the intersection of Sangamon Avenue and Dirksen Parkway to accommodate dual left-turn lanes in all directions, as well as dual right-turn lanes for westbound Sangamon Avenue turning onto northbound Dirksen Parkway. Additional right-turn lane storage will be provided, and medians will be installed in all directions to help manage traffic flow and enhance safety.

The project also includes upgrades to sidewalks, traffic signals, lighting, and drainage systems. These improvements are expected to significantly increase safety for all roadway users.

Given the impact of these changes on the surrounding community, public input is a vital part of the planning process.

Is this project funded, and, when could construction begin?
Funding for construction is included in the FY 2026-2031 Multi-Year Highway Improvement Program. Construction plan development, land acquisition, and other coordination may take significant time to complete. Construction is anticipated to begin in the 2027-2028 construction season.

How much will the project cost?
The total project cost is estimated to be approximately $24 million. The estimated construction cost portion is $18 million. An additional $6 million is estimated for engineering, land acquisition and any necessary utility relocation. The cost estimate will continue to be refined as the project advances through the planning and design phases.

How can I keep informed on the study's progress.
Project updates will be shared on this website and through IDOT’s official social media channels to keep the public informed as progress continues.

Project resources will be shared in the coming weeks.
