Vermilion County Roundabout

Two bridges in Danville are nearing the end of their service life due to low condition ratings of their concrete decks, steel beams, and supports. These include the Perrysville Road bridge over Interstate 74 and the Bowman Avenue bridge over Texas Avenue. Additionally, the Perrysville Road bridge has vertical clearance levels below current standards for both the interstate and its ramps.

IDOT is currently completing Phase I of the project, which involves preliminary engineering and environmental studies. Pending funding, construction is tentatively scheduled for 2027 and is expected to take approximately two construction seasons.

The project includes the following improvements:  

Bowman Avenue

  • Bowman Avenue Bridge over Texas Avenue        
    • Structure removal 
    • Construction of a roundabout with 10-foot shared pedestrian/bicycle accommodations

North of the Roundabout         

  • Replace curb, gutter, and driveway entrances
  • Replace sidewalks on both sides of the road
  • Roadway resurfacing

South of the Roundabout 

  • Install 10-foot shared pedestrian/bicycle accommodations along the east side
  • Add curb and gutter on the east side
  • Resurface roadway
  • Replace traffic signals

Bowman Avenue Bridge over Interstate 74

  • Widen the structure to include separated 10-foot shared pedestrian/bicycle accommodations
  • Bridge deck overlay work  

Texas Avenue

  • Reconstruct the roadway and raise the grade for the proposed roundabout
  • Construct sidewalks on the north side of the road
  • Reconstruct driveway entrances

Perrysville Road 

  • Perrysville Road/Texas Avenue Intersection
    • Reconstruct the intersection
    • Replace curb and gutter
    • Replace sidewalks
  • Perrysville Road Bridge over Interstate 74
    • Remove the structure
    • Construct a cul-de-sac north of the bridge
    • Dead-end Perrysville Road south of the bridge

  • PROJECT SCOPE: Structure removal, construction of a roundabout with 10-foot shared pedestrian/bicycle accommodations, sidewalk construction on the north side of the road, resurfacing, bridge deck overlays
  • ESTIMATED COST: $6.5M
  • DURATION: 2027 - 2028 (estimated to take two constructions seasons)
  • TRAFFIC IMPACTS: The intersection of Bowman Avenue with Texas Avenue will be closed for the construction of the roundabout at this intersection with traffic to use marked detours.  The remainder of the work will be completed using stage construction allowing two-way traffic through the work zones.

PHASE I: PRELIMINARY ENGINEERING

  • Develop project scope, purpose and need
  • Conduct technical and environmental studies
  • Identify right-of-way needs
  • Solicit public input
  • Obtain study approval

PHASE II: DESIGN ENGINEERING

Approximately 2 years

  • Refine design and cost estimate
  • Develop contract plans, specifications and special provisions
  • Complete land acquisition

PHASE III: CONSTRUCTION

Approximately 2 construction seasons

  • Earliest expected construction starte date: Spring 2027
  • Construction is expected to take two construction seasons
