Will, Kankakee Counties - Illinois 50 (Governors Highway) Improvements

The Illinois Department of Transportation is nearing completion of a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) for the improvement of Illinois 50 (Governors Highway) from Wilmington-Peotone Road to County Line Road in Peotone and Manteno townships, in Will and Kankakee counties. This improvement is included in the department’s FY 2026-2031 Proposed Highway Improvement Program. Current engineering efforts are underway with the goal of obtaining contract bids in the middle years of the multi-year program, depending on plan readiness, land acquisition and funding availability. The study will identify safety improvements and strategies to reduce crashes along the corridor.

Note: IDOT projects typically have three phases. Phase I (or the project study) includes developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design. Phase II (design) includes refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (construction) includes the actual construction of the project.
