Winnebago County - U.S. 20 from Pecatonica to Falconer Road

The Illinois Department of Transportation is conducting a Phase I (preliminary engineering and environmental) study of the reconstruction of U.S. 20 from Pecatonica Road to Falconer Road in Winnebago County.

This page serves to provide information to the public about the project as the study develops and to facilitate public input.

The proposed pavement improvements consist of reconstruction via rubblization, a process which the breaks the existing pavement into rubble and a new surface is paved onto it, and outside shoulder widening. Proposed structure improvements include reconstruction of deteriorated culverts. No bridge work is expected, and traffic is anticipated to be maintained through staged construction.

As a part of the pavement reconstruction scope, the district has studied crash data along this corridor and identified two intersections that would benefit from geometric safety improvements, which include the installation of restricted crossing U-turn intersections. The proposed road geometry will restrict through and left turn movements at its intersections with Conger Road and Hoisington Road.

In place of the through and left turn movements from Conger Road and Hoisington Road, new median U-turn access points will be added downstream of the intersections to allow the restricted through movements. The proposed RCUT design follows the 2014 FHWA Restricted Crossing U-turn Informational Guide.
