Saved by the Helmet
Motorcycling is inherently dangerous, but research shows that a DOT-certified helmet is 37 percent effective in reducing motorcycle fatalities and 67 percent effective in reducing serious brain injuries in the event of a crash.
To increase awareness of the benefits of helmets and to recognize riders who implemented this lifesaving strategy and survived a crash, the Illinois Department of Transportation created the Saved by the Helmet award.
Who can submit nominations:
- Law enforcement officers
- Emergency medical providers
- Other agencies involved in traffic crash reporting
Nominee criteria:
- Involved in an Illinois crash, but need not be an Illinois resident
- Wore a DOT-certified helmet at the time of the crash
- Not under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Serious crash (more than a fender bender)
- Not at fault for the crash and not cited for a willful or intentional violation of the law
Eligibility will be determined after a complete review of the nomination and supporting documents.
