Kane and Cook Counties – US 20 from Randall Road to Shales Parkway

The Illinois Department of Transportation (Department) has completed preliminary engineering and environmental studies (Phase I) for the improvement of US 20 in the City of Elgin in Kane and Cook Counties.  The proposed project is anticipated to consist of the addition of auxiliary lanes from Grace Street to State Street, bridge rehabilitation, intersection improvements, noise walls, pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations, and drainage improvements.  This improvement also includes the removal and replacement of the Fox River Bridge to include two through lanes in each direction with auxiliary lanes and bicyclist and pedestrian accommodations.  The improvements are expected to improve traffic operations and enhance safety along the corridor.

This improvement is included in the Department's FY 2022-2027 Proposed Highway Improvement Program.  Current engineering efforts are targeted to ensure a contract letting in the middle years of the multi-year program contingent upon plan readiness, land acquisition, and funding availability through future annual legislative appropriations.

This website has been created to provide the public with educational information and materials in relation to the US 20 from Randall Road to Shales Parkway Phase I study.

Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.
