Metra Clybourn Station Feasibility Study
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is conducting a feasibility study to evaluate alternatives for modernizing the Metra Clybourn Station, located on North Ashland Avenue and West Armitage Avenue.
The study will develop alternatives to the existing condition of the Clybourn Station that meet current design standards and guidelines – this might include the relocation of the station to a nearby site that can accommodate modern commuter and potential intercity rail operations.

The Metra Clybourn Station was constructed in 1900 and remains one of Metra’s busiest non-downtown stations, serving both the Union Pacific North and Northwest lines. Despite its high ridership and potential as a key multimodal access point, the station has received minimal investment over the decades.
The Metra Clybourn Station Feasibility Study will explore opportunities to enhance accessibility, capacity, and overall passenger experience, while supporting equitable, transit-oriented, and sustainable development that strengthens regional mobility and economic growth.
Future Station Concepts: Accessibility: Elevators, ramps, tactile wayfinding and accessible paths from street to platform, expanded parking, increased seating areas. • Modern passenger facilities: Weather-protected platforms, digital signage, improved lighting, and enhanced security. • Multimodal integration: Seamless connections to CTA bus routes, bike lanes, micro-mobility hubs, and rideshare zones. • Enhanced pedestrian and bicycle access: Improved sidewalks, crosswalks, and protected bike infrastructure linking to Elston, Ashland, and Armitage corridors. • Transit-oriented development (TOD) opportunities: Coordination with adjacent redevelopment projects (Lincoln Yards, Foundry Park) to support retail and mixed-use development near the station. • Sustainability: Incorporation of energy-efficient materials, green infrastructure, and stormwater management features. • Operational improvements: Optimized track configuration, platform capacity for both UP-N and UP-NW lines, and improved passenger flow.
