St. Clair County - I-255 Rehabilitation – Resurface from Illinois 15 to Illinois 157

Thank you for visiting the Interstate 255 project page. The Illinois Department of Transportation is preparing the contract plans for this road improvement*. This project consists of rehabilitating and resurfacing approximately 3.5 miles of I-255 from Illinois 15 to Illinois 157 in St. Clair County, including significant bridge repairs, safety improvements, new lighting, upgraded signing and drainage improvements. The project will restore the road and bridges to a smooth and safe condition for motorists and will support future investment in the region. The estimated $74.3 million project will be completed under a full closure for approximately six months and is anticipated to begin in early spring 2025.

Benefits from complete lane closures include:

  • Anticipated completion of the project in six months instead of 2 years.
  • Save taxpayers over $10 million, plus the ongoing costs of repairing lanes that would need to stay open with staged construction.
  • Eliminate lane shifts for new configurations, thus reducing crashes and driver confusion.
  • Ensure the safety of workers during construction by keeping traffic out of the work zone.
