Project Summary
Serving as the western gateway to the City of Chicago, I-290 is a major link in the transportation network serving northeast Illinois. The Project is one of several projects to be completed as part of the larger I-290 Corridor Project. The scope of the Project includes drainage improvements extending from the Des Plaines River to east of Austin Boulevard along the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) to alleviate flooding experienced along the corridor. The improvements will supplement the existing storm sewer system, connecting to and conveying drainage to IDOT’s Pump Station No. 4. The new storm sewer system is expected to be an underground tunnel. The current construction cost is estimated at $400,000,000.

Project Goals
- Improve stormwater drainage and alleviate flooding along the I-290 Corridor.
- Reduce construction impacts on the environment, nearby communities, utilities, the Des Plaines River, and the traveling public, including road, rail, and pedestrian traffic.
- Advance design and construction efficiently to minimize delays and support coordination with adjacent I-290 improvements and long-term maintenance.
- Maintain a safe work zone and tunnel construction program through effective risk identification and mitigation.
- Support inclusive participation and clear public communication with local jurisdictions, partners, and stakeholders.
