Boone Co - Illinois 76 and Caledonia Road
The Illinois Department of Transportation is currently conducting a Phase I (Preliminary Engineering and Environmental) Study of the intersection of Illinois 76 and Caledonia Road between Belvidere and Poplar Grove in Boone County. This study will examine suitable traffic control alternatives that address the safety and mobility of traffic at the intersection.
Currently, this is an intersection where traffic on Caledonia Road must stop to traffic at Illinois 76. During the Phase I Study process there will be opportunities for stakeholder input and feedback. Phase I, Phase II (prepare contract bid plans), and Phase III (construction) are currently funded.
Public Meeting:
- Date: Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025
- Time: 2-6 p.m.
- Location: Boone County Administrative Building Boardroom, 1212 Logan Ave., Belvidere, Illinois, 61008
Proposed for this intersection is a conversion into a modern roundabout with a 20-foot-wide circulating single lane. The center of the roundabout and long splitter islands will deflect entering vehicles approaching the roundabout.
The proposed roundabout includes space for future realignments of Spring Creek and Woodstock roads to connect to the intersection. A 14-foot-wide concrete truck apron, located just outside of the central island, is proposed. This area will accommodate large trucks, farm equipment and emergency vehicles, providing them with an additional area to maneuver through the circle. Entering vehicles would yield to traffic circulating counterclockwise in the circle. Lighting around the roundabout would be installed.
A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 2-6 at the Boone County Administrative Building Boardroom, 1212 Logan Ave., Belvidere. All exhibits shown here will also be shown at the public meeting.
