Cook County - I-94 Bishop Ford Freeway
In 2026, IDOT will begin rehabilitating the Bishop Freeway (Interstate 94), from west of Martin Luthur King Drive to U.S. 6 (159TH Street).
The estimated $93 million project consists of patching and resurfacing, replacing overhead sign structures, installing new LED lighting. The project will also rehabilitate the following bridges:
Indiana Harbor Belt railroad, Dolton Avenue, Michigan City Road, 154th Street, Greenwood Avenue, U.S. 6 (159TH Street) and both Little Calumet River bridges.
The work will take place over two consecutive construction seasons. The project is expected to begin in Spring 2026.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is improving the Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) to enhance safety, extend the life of aging infrastructure, and ensure travel reliability for the more than 167,000 vehicles that travel the corridor every day.

Ramp closures will take place with varying durations due to the staging and sequencing of the project and types of repairs needed at each location. Motorists will be notified at least one week in advance via posted signage, social media, IDOT website and press releases. Closures are weather dependent.
