Active Transportation Plan

IDOT's Active Transportation Plan creates a vision and identifies measures to improve walking and biking infrastructure throughout Illinois.

IDOT has worked with the general public and stakeholders to develop an Active Transportation Plan that sets a vision and identifies measures to improve walking and biking infrastructure throughout the state.

To understand technical practitioners and public feedback, the project included various community engagement activities to hear from residents with goal of understanding the current conditions of walking and biking in the state and identifying needs of Illinois residents. Check out options below to access the plan, public engagement findings, meeting recordings and project deliverables.

Prior to this plan, Illinois had the Illinois Bike Plan to address biking needs in Illinois. This plan was considered innovative at the time of development. If you would like to know more about this plan, view the Illinois Bike Transportation Plan page.

This plan was centered around public engagement to understand the existing conditions, current needs, and community priorities. Through virtual and in-person events, there were a variety of ways to get involved in this project. During the development of Walk Roll Illinois, IDOT hosted intentional community outreach events in efforts to leverage valuable engagement and stakeholder input.  Please see the sections below that outline these efforts.  

Survey(s)

The survey afforded an opportunity to understand large scale feedback on the most recent walking and biking activity, how individuals felt about active transportation, and recent needs, concerns, and priorities. This Survey is now closed for public comment. Results of this survey can be found in the Documents section.

Interactive Map

Through an online map portal, participants were able to locate and share where walking, biking, and rolling occurs within their community. This helps to understand gaps in service, requested improvements and safety concerns. This interactive map is closed for public comment. 

Events

During development, IDOT hosted intentional community outreach events in efforts to leverage valuable engagement and stakeholder input.  These events were held throughout the state in both rural and urban setting to get a true understanding of the needs of Illinois residents.

In addition to events, IDOT developed a virtual public meeting space of which allowed for on-going feedback from the public on their own schedule. Participants used a link to join the public open house affording the opportunity to view project progress and documents.
