IDOT Region 1

Serving one of the most populous urban areas in the nation, IDOT‘s Region 1/District 1, located in northeastern Illinois, includes the state’s most recognizable city, Chicago. This region is home to six counties: Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Will.

The nation’s second busiest airport (O’Hare), one of the country’s three main inland distribution centers (Chicago), and the port of Chicago itself all are located in this region. Annually, the region's 28,060 centerline miles of roads (2,775 state-maintained) feel the impact of more than some 650 million passengers utilize the Regional Transportation Authority's rail and bus services. RTA oversees the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra rail and Pace bus services and is the largest transit system in the state and third-largest nationally. Chicago’s Union Station, a hub for commuter and inter-city passenger rail connections, is the fourth-busiest Amtrak station in the nation.

Add to this hundreds of miles of bike paths, bike lanes, and sidewalks and pedestrian paths, and you can quickly see that Region 1 is a complex multimodal transportation hub.
