IDOT Region 3
IDOT’s Region 3 spans north-central Illinois and includes IDOT’s District 4 and District 5. Three of Illinois’ Scenic Byways – Great River Road, Lincoln Highway and Historic Route 66 – continue their way southward through this region with its 25,547 centerline miles of roads, including 2,938 state system miles. The Illinois River and the Mississippi River each play a major role in this region as freight highways to the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. The region’s railroads also move thousands of tons of freight. Numerous airports serve the region including those in Peoria and Bloomington-Normal. The twin cities of Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana also are served by Amtrak.
Numerous bike paths and bike-friendly accommodations are available for travelers in Region 3. The region is also served by a variety of transit operators. Catch the train to Bloomington-Normal to spend a day uptown taking in museums and shopping. Take a weekend drive to Champaign-Urbana on Interstate 74 to catch a college game or hop a ride on an intercity bus to Galesburg to visit a park or attend a jazz festival.
