Periodic Vehicle Inspection/Diesel Emission
IDOT is responsible for regulating and overseeing inspections that are conducted at approximately 250 official testing stations located across Illinois.
COMMERCIAL and privately-owned vehicles operated on Illinois highways are required by law to be inspected in accordance with establish criteria on a periodic basis. Interstate carriers of property are required to be inspected annually, while Intrastate carriers are required to be inspected every six months. INTERSTATE CARRIERS OF PASSENGERS are subject to BOTH the interstate (Annual) as well as the intrastate (Semi-Annual) inspection.
The following vehicles are subject to the Illinois Diesel Emission Inspection Program:
- Intrastate diesel powered vehicles that are registered for a gross weight of more than 16,000 pounds, and
- Registered within the affected area, and
- Two year or older model year
- Interstate diesel powered buses that are registered for a gross weight of more than 16,000 pounds, and
- Registered within the affected area, and
- Two year or older model year.
The affected areas are the counties of: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, Monroe, Will, St. Clair
And the townships of:
- Aux Sable and Goose Lake in Grundy County, and
- Oswego in Kendall County
