Mega Project - South Suburban Airport Project Study

The vision for the South Suburban Airport involves designing and constructing a supplemental, commercial service airfield that will serve the greater Chicagoland area. Located conveniently outside of Chicago, a major transportation hub in America’s heartland, the South Suburban Airport will offer travelers and businesses an expanded array of options in air and freight travel to meet their growing transportation needs.

To make this project a reality, the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other local and regional stakeholders have begun preparing an airport master plan and an environmental impact statement — steps necessary to construct what is commonly referred to as the inaugural airport project. As work continues on the airport master plan and the environmental impact statement, you will find regular updates about the project on the South Suburban Airport website, including reports, maps, exhibits, studies and public meeting notices. Presenting this information is part of the Division of Aeronautics' long-standing policy of providing land owners within the South Suburban Airport project area and the general public with full disclosure about acquisitions, ownership and other details about the project. It is the Division of Aeronautics' goal to provide you with a transparent and seamless sharing of information and data as development of the South Suburban Airport continues.

Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.
