Frequently Asked Questions

Where is this project?

The existing bridge is on U.S. 52 approximately 2.1 miles west of Illinois 71 in La Salle County. View the map. The closest communities to the bridge are the town of Norway to the southeast and the town of Serena to the west.

What is the purpose of this project?

The purpose of this project is to improve the existing U.S. 52 Fox River bridge while minimizing impacts to the traveling public and its surrounding environment.

What is the scope of this project?

This project consists of removal and replacement of the existing bridge. The bridge is a five span, reinforced concrete open spandrel deck arch supported on reinforced concrete vaulted abutments at the ends with four intermediate reinforced concrete piers. The new bridge is a three span, steel multi-girder bridge supported by stub abutments at both ends with two intermediate concrete piers.

Why is the existing bridge on U.S. 52 being replaced?

The bridge was originally built in 1931. The current condition of this bridge has exponentially deteriorated over the recent years to a point where maintenance is cost prohibitive, and a replacement is required.

Why is the vertical profile being raised with this project?

This project will revise the geometric profile of the roadway to meet current department policies. The proposed profile raise will provide the required stopping sight distance (SSD) for a design speed of 55 mph and improve safety.

What is the funding status for this project?

This project is currently included in IDOT’s Fiscal Year 2024-2029 Proposed Highway Improvement Program.

Where can I get additional information about this project?

Under the Resources tab you can view the project location map, bridge photos, old structure plans, bridge condition report (BCR), and the draft type, size, and location (TS&L) drawing.
