The project is located adjacent to Fayetteville in southeastern St. Clair County.  The village of Fayetteville sits just west of the Kaskaskia River with an approximate population of 400.  The aerial map below illustrates the proximity of the village to the Kaskaskia River. 

IDOT’S Three-Phase Project Development Process

Phase II: Current Phase of the Project

During Phase II, the final design will be determined, and construction bid and right of way documents will be completed.  The estimated timeframe to complete these activities using the Innovative Project Delivery process is 12 months. 

Phase I: Completed in May 2026

The Illinois 4/15 Kaskaskia River bridge project has completed Phase I. Preliminary engineering, environmental studies, proposed geometry and right of way requirements were defined. Public meetings were held, and a project study group helped to develop and refine alternatives for the bridge replacement.

Phase I: Preliminary Design & Environmental Study

IDOT and its engineering consultant team will inventory existing conditions, such as traffic data and crash history, and will identify and document environmental constraints as the project moves forward. The Project Study Group, with input from the public, will also develop and refine improvement alternatives. The result of the study will be a design for a new bridge that addresses identified transportation issues and serves the area’s future needs.  Public involvement will take place throughout the project development.

Crash History

A full crash analysis will be completed for the project. Measures to reduce crashes will be evaluated and included in the overall project design.
