SCAM ALERT:  A current text message smishing scam claims recipients owe money associated with traffic tickets, tolls, and other fines.  These are not legitimate messages from the Illinois Department of Transportation.  If you receive a message report it to the Federal Trade Commission and/or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Traffic Impacts

The bridge will be completely closed to all traffic for about eight months starting March 18 through November 2023, weather permitting. During the closure, the boat ramp and dock access to the Lacon Marina will remain open. The bridge closure is necessary due to the type of work being performed on the structure and its narrow width, which does not allow room for staging. Safety is always IDOT’s top priority. To ensure this, the closure is necessary for:

  • Replacement of all bridge joints requires complete removal of portions of the bridge deck riding surface
  • Structural steel repairs that will require all traffic to be removed from the structure while the work is being performed
  • Bridge deck microsilica concrete overlay that will be paved over the full width of the bridge

Detour

The 15.7-mile detour uses Illinois 29, Illinois 18 and Illinois 26 to make the loop from Sparland to Lacon or Lacon to Sparland.

Special Provisions

Environmental accommodations will be made to prevent debris, equipment, tools or any other construction-related materials from falling into the Illinois River. This may result in closing spans, except the main span over the navigation channel, to river traffic at times.
