Central Avenue at the Belt Railway of Chicago (BRC) Railroad Grade Separation Study

The Illinois Department of Transportation (Department) has conducted preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the proposed improvement of Central Avenue at BRC Railroad in the vicinity of 54th Street in the City of Chicago. The purpose of the study was to evaluate potential alternatives for grade separating the roadway and railroad to reduce congestion, improve safety and improve multi-modal connectivity. The preferred alternative identified through the Department’s studies consists of Central Avenue being depressed on existing alignment below the BRC Railroad and Archer Avenue. However, due to lack of support and financial resources for further implementation the Department is no longer pursuing this project.

Please note, the grade separation improvement at this location was identified as GS2 in the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program.  Please visit CREATE's website for more information about the program."
