Overview
What is this study?
This study is a Phase I Preliminary Engineering and Environmental Study for US Route 136 in Hamilton, Illinois. The proposed purpose and need of this study is to prevent future flooding on the roadway that previously made the route impassible at this location. The proposed project is approximately 0.65 miles long and involves existing structures carrying US Route 136 over the Hamilton Slough and Railroad Creek as well as the existing Keokuk Junction at-grade railroad crossing.
Why is this Study important to you?
The Mississippi River crossing at Hamilton is a vital transportation link between Illinois and Iowa. Major flooding of the existing roadway occurred in 1993, 2008 and 2019. The nearest alternative river crossing is approximately 22 miles to the north at Niota/Fort Madison. The Illinois Department of Transportation recognizes the importance of this river crossing to the communities and economies in both Illinois and Iowa, and the impact that roadway flooding can have on them. Working together, we can help make this much-needed improvement a reality.
