I-270/Illinois 111 Interchange Reconstruction Project

This project will reconstruct the Interstate 270 and Illinois 111 interchange to improve safety, reduce congestion and enhance quality of life while creating jobs and long-term economic opportunity for the region.

Overview

Starting in May 2025, the reconstruction and modernization of the I-270/Illinois 111 interchange will begin to improve safety and reduce congestion in the Metro East area. While the project will require a partial closure of Illinois 111 and several ramps at I-270 for approximately five months, this approach will lead to a quicker project completion, increased safety and cost savings for taxpayers.

The benefits from a partial closure include:

  • Completion of the project in five months instead of 2-3 years.
  • Saving approximately $10 million taxpayer dollars in addition to the ongoing costs that would be required to repair lanes remaining open in staged construction.
  • Elimination of significant traffic backups onto mainline I-270 entering a work zone and lane shifts for new configurations, reducing crashes and driver confusion.

In the heart of the warehouse district in Pontoon Beach and Edwardsville, the interchange serves as a local travel corridor for businesses and residences.

The project, funded by a Competitive Freight Grant administered by IDOT, consists of converting the I-270 and Illinois 111 cloverleaf interchange to a diverging diamond in Madison County.

Closure: May 1, 2025
Estimated Completion Date: Sept. 30, 2025
Awarded Construction Cost: $25.1 million
